First off thank you to everyone who expressed their love and kept my Mom in their prayers, in person, on the phone or online (on Facebook, through Email or on this blog) during this challenging time.
A week ago, my Mom suffered a stroke. (To read more about it check out my previous post titled: The High Cost of Waiting http://relmes.wordpress.com/2008/09/24/the-high-cost-of-waiting/
But we got lucky!!!
The reason I say “we” is because instead of wondering what might have been, we are wondering what is next, and instead of thinking what we could have done in the past to help her, we are thinking of how we can help her in the future and instead of planning a funeral, we are planning her rehabilitation.
As I mentioned in the last post, when the stroke hit, she recognized she was in trouble and she called for help and getting there saved her life.
But as she realizes now, her life [...]

Don’t you love it when somebody sees something for the first time? The sense of awe and wonder at what’s been there all along, but they’ve never seen it before?
I never get enough of it.
Tonight I got to see it again in a group of some pretty neat guys. And I got to wallow around in my favorite passage like a pig in a mud hole.
I believe I’m going to have a Jerry Clower moment…

Dear America:
In our age of internet and cell phones, it sometimes seems that we live at the speed of light, and it is easy to get swept away in a chaotic tide of activity.  We often find little time for silent reflection.  We hardly have time to think at all, never mind time to think about the important questions.  And yet we run the risk of arriving breathless at the end of life and finding that we have missed the point.  When is the last time you thought about your life, and what you want out of it?  What is most important to you in life?  Please take a moment now to think about it.  Try to pause, silent the inrushing stream of data.  if you need help organizing your thoughts, Victor Frankl’s poignant question may help you to get to the heart of the matter.  The great psychologist sometimes asked his struggling patients:  [...]

My postings will be somewhat erratic the next few days (ok, more so than usual). I have traveled west to Seattle, Washington for the annual National Association for College Admissions Counseling national conference. Admissions officers, guidance counselors gather to discuss the great issues of our profession. Also, we spend a lot of time talking with “cutting edge” vendors that will use “exciting new products” to help us promote our schools to you. As I get a few minutes at the computer, I’ll try not to make too much fun of the marketing techniques that they hawk (which are decidedly NOT cutting edge), the studies they produce (which say the same thing our studies have said since 1999), and the discussions I overhear. Once I get all of this out of my system, I’ll get back to talking about recommendations, then on to new topics. [...]

Brad and I have a conversation almost daily about where our next trip will be. My mind is not made up /changes when it comes to this, but today’s top 5 is: Morocco, Greece, India, South Africa and Egypt. New Zealand is a very close sixth place. What’s on your list?

Yesterday, Sitting and reading an extremely hilarious book about some chick in sydney and her pets I thought “Hmmm dats a nice idea..maybe I should listen to my extremely crazy friends atleast once in this lifetime and get myself a dog, a very cute ‘Golden Retriever’ (Buntu keeps saying I have hair like one, come to think of it I mite even save some bucks on multiple shampoos.. It can use mine…) or probably a ‘Jack Chi’.. I mean how much harmful can THAT be??? Now now, how about a cat? like a really snowy one (as in stuart little)… oh gosh NO man!!! I am not allowed to have cats..”
Its true, ages ago I promised myself I  wasnt allowed to have a cat. Why? Because if you are a single woman and have a cat, you might as well get a wispy grey bun, a tweed suit, a pair [...]

First of all, I apologize to all my readers for the lack of posts.  Since I have gone back to school, life has been crazy.
One of the many things I have been busy with was the flooding that took place in Northern Illinois a week ago.  I work part time for a county Office of Emergency Management, and I think most of the towns in our county handled the disaster as best as they could.  Others, however, I think did a dis-service to the people who live in their towns.  My mother’s basement was taking on water through a window well on the side of her house.  She contacted multiple departments in her village and was not able to get a simple resource as sand bags.  Other municipalities near her were coming to the county to get more sand bags for their residents, and my mom’s town simply said “Not [...]

Belle is still best friends with the boy at school; is it crazy of me to worry that in 4 years time she’s going to be left bereft and friendless when/if M decides that, actually, he wants to be friends with the boys? Watching them together is hilarious. We walked home with M and his mum and sister on Friday; as they had to part they kissed solemnly and then started making frantic plans to meet up after school one day soon. M: How about next Wednesday? Belle (to me): Can I? Can I? Me: No you have ballet. Belle: OK, M, how about Tuesday? M: No I can’t do Tuesday. Oh, the social whirl. We’ve settled on a Friday in about 3 weeks’ time.
The cleaner was sick last week so Ned and I spent Friday cleaning. I would have been quite happy with a 30-minute whirl-round with the hoover [...]

I’ll start this post with a confession - I’m not very good at being ill. And definitely not very good at the ‘not being able to get out of bed to crawl to the door’ type of ill. My usual style is to pop a few ibuprofen and get on with it. But this weekend I couldn’t. I’m also not very good at asking for help. But this weekend was a marvellous example of how fantastic my friends are, and how they so often display love and compassion to me.
At this point, let me introduce you to Mandy. Mandy is great - her place of residence is the beautiful town of Halesowen, she works as a social worker, and she has been a willing accomplice in many SA prayer adventures over the past three or four years. As a friend Mandy has joined me in many an escapade - our fantastic birthday trips this year being a [...]
